Gurgaon Weather Shift: Temperatures Fall Amidst Gusty Winds and Light Rain
On Tuesday, Gurgaon witnessed a notable change in weather conditions, transitioning from a sunny and clear morning to a day marked by gusty winds and intermittent light rainfall. This shift brought a welcome relief from the heat, as temperatures dropped across the city.
IMD Explains Convective Activity Driving Weather Change
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the sudden weather alteration was primarily driven by convective activity triggered by daytime heating. An IMD official elaborated, "After the recent western disturbance passed, temperatures began to rise again under clear conditions. This heating leads to the development of convective clouds, which can trigger isolated thunderstorms, especially over south Haryana."
The official further clarified that unlike broader western disturbances, convection is highly localized and depends on factors such as heat and humidity. "As temperatures rise during the day, isolated pockets in the state saw thunderstorm development," the official added.
Temperature Data from Local Observatories
Specific temperature readings from Gurgaon's monitoring stations highlight the cooling effect:
- At the Gurgaon KVK observatory, the maximum temperature was recorded at 32.8 degrees Celsius, down from 33.7 degrees Celsius a day earlier. The minimum settled at 17.9 degrees Celsius, compared to 19 degrees Celsius on the previous day.
- At NorthCap University's monitoring station, the maximum temperature was 34.5 degrees Celsius, slightly lower than 34.6 degrees Celsius recorded a day earlier, while the minimum dropped to 19.4 degrees Celsius from 20.9 degrees Celsius.
Rainfall Patterns and Upcoming Weather Systems
Rainfall remained scattered throughout the day. While no precipitation was recorded at the Gurgaon KVK station, NorthCap University logged 2 mm of rainfall until 5:30 PM. The intermittent drizzle continued until around 6 PM in some parts, aiding a marginal dip in temperatures.
Looking ahead, the IMD predicts another western disturbance expected to influence the region on April 2, which could lead to more rainfall activity. Maximum temperatures are forecasted to rise gradually by 3-4 degrees Celsius over the next four days, before dipping again by 3-4 degrees Celsius under the influence of the approaching weather system.
Broader Meteorological Context
Meteorologists noted that the frequent spells of clouding, rain, and muted temperature rise over the past two weeks are due to relatively active western disturbances and the influence of upper-level wind patterns, including the subtropical jet stream shifting slightly southwards.
In terms of rainfall statistics, Haryana recorded 14.7 mm rainfall in March this year, around 3% below the normal of 15.1 mm. However, Gurgaon received 12.5 mm rainfall against a normal of 10.3 mm, registering a surplus of 22%.
