Rainfall Deficit Across Himachal Pradesh in June
Himachal Pradesh recorded a significant rainfall deficit of 33 per cent in June, according to data from the Shimla meteorological office. From June 1 to 29, the state received only 63.8 mm of rain compared to the normal of 95.4 mm. This shortfall affected 11 of the 12 districts, with only Kinnaur experiencing a surplus of 7 per cent.
District-Wise Deficit Data
The deficit varied across districts, with Sirmaur recording the highest shortfall at 54 per cent, followed by Lahaul-Spiti at 53 per cent, Kullu at 45 per cent, and Mandi at 41 per cent. Kangra saw a 35 per cent deficit, Bilaspur 33 per cent, Chamba and Una 28 per cent each, Hamirpur 27 per cent, Solan 17 per cent, and Shimla 6 per cent. Kinnaur was the only district with excess rainfall.
Monsoon Onset and Forecast
According to Sandeep Sharma, a senior official at the Shimla meteorological office, conditions are becoming favourable for the onset of monsoon in parts of Himachal Pradesh within the next three to four days. He stated, "Heavy, widespread rains are likely in parts of the state on July 2 and 3." However, the overall monsoon season from June to September is expected to see below-normal rainfall, with fewer rainy days than average. The normal rainfall for the state during this period is 734.4 mm.
Impact and Outlook
The deficit in June raises concerns for agriculture and water resources in the state. While the upcoming rains may provide some relief, the forecast of below-normal monsoon activity suggests that the region may continue to face dry conditions. Farmers and authorities are advised to plan accordingly.
