Light Rain in Kanpur Fails to Cool, Heatwave Conditions Linger
Kanpur Light Rain Fails to Cool, Heatwave Persists

Kanpur: Light rain in a few parts of Kanpur Nagar on Thursday failed to provide relief from the prevailing heat and humid conditions, as temperatures remained largely unchanged across the city.

Temperature and Humidity Details

According to local observatories, the maximum temperature was recorded at 39.6 degrees Celsius, just 0.4 degrees lower than the previous day, while the minimum temperature remained above normal at 18.4 degrees Celsius. Residents continued to grapple with sultry weather that has persisted for several days. Humidity levels hovered around 59 per cent, while north-easterly winds blowing at speeds of 3.6 kmph to 9.1 kmph offered little respite from discomfort.

Pre-Monsoon Showers

As part of pre-monsoon activity, localities including Vishnupuri, Shastri Nagar, Kalyanpur and nearby areas witnessed brief light showers during the afternoon. However, sunshine quickly returned, adding to the discomfort. In several markets and busy intersections, residents and traders erected temporary green covers to shield commuters from direct exposure to the harsh sun.

IMD Forecast

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast predominantly clear, hot and dry weather across the Kanpur division over the next 24 hours. Maximum temperatures in different districts are expected to range between 39 degrees Celsius and 43 degrees Celsius, creating heatwave-like conditions during the daytime.

For Kanpur Nagar, the IMD has predicted a clear sky with no likelihood of rainfall. Hot winds are expected during the afternoon, with the maximum temperature likely to remain between 41 degrees Celsius and 43 degrees Celsius and the minimum between 31 degrees Celsius and 32 degrees Celsius.

Expert Opinion

Weather expert at Chandra Shekhar Azad University of Agriculture and Technology, Dr SN Sunil Pandey, said that due to atmospheric moisture, cloud movement and strong winds, isolated light rain or drizzle may occur in pockets of the Kanpur division. He added that temperatures could fluctuate by one to two degrees on Friday, while humid conditions are expected to persist. He also warned that heat intensity may increase further once bright sunshine returns.
