Karnataka Government Greenlights Railway Barricade to Mitigate Elephant-Human Conflict in Chikkamagaluru

In a significant move to address the escalating human-animal conflict in Chikkamagaluru district, the Karnataka state government has approved the construction of a railway barricade. This initiative targets the NR Pura taluk, where elephant intrusions have become a pressing concern, threatening both agricultural livelihoods and human safety.

Funding and Scope of the Project

A substantial grant of Rs 12.7 crore has been allocated for this project, which will cover a total stretch of 7.7 kilometers. The barricade will span across the NR Pura, Chikka Agrahara, and Balehonnur forest ranges under the Koppa forest division. Officials emphasize that this measure is crucial to mitigate crop damage and ensure the security of residents in the affected villages.

Background and Proposal Submission

The chief conservator of forests for the Chikkamagaluru circle submitted a detailed proposal to the government, highlighting the severe elephant problem in these regions. Elephants from the Bhadra Tiger Reserve have been crossing into the NR Pura and Chikkagrahara forest ranges, impacting the Bhadra backwaters and river areas, and increasingly settling in nearby villages. Similarly, elephants from the Mudigere and Aldur forest ranges have entered the Balehonnur area, causing extensive destruction to crops cultivated by local farmers.

Local Impact and Statistics

According to Sringeri MLA TD Rajegowda, it is estimated that approximately 30 to 40 elephants are currently present in the forest and coffee plantations of these areas. Tragically, four people have lost their lives due to these disturbances in the recent past. In response, a proposal was formally submitted to the government to release funds for installing railway barricades as a strategic solution to mitigate the elephant threat. The government approved this proposal on Tuesday, as confirmed by the MLA.

Detailed Allocation of Funds

As per the approval, administrative sanction has been granted for specific segments of the barricade:

  • Rs 4.3 crore for a 2.5-kilometer stretch from Kollehalli to Karkuta in the Chikkagrahara range.
  • Rs 4.7 crore for a 2.8-kilometer stretch from Sarya to Karkuta.
  • Rs 3.7 crore for a 2.3-kilometer stretch from Bellingi to Kollehalli.

This totals Rs 12.7 crore for the combined 7.7-kilometer barricade, ensuring comprehensive coverage across critical zones.

Community Response and Future Recommendations

Local residents have welcomed this government initiative, urging authorities to ensure that the construction work is completed within the stipulated timeframe. Additionally, community members like Chandru of NR Pura have suggested that the forest department should identify other potential entry points where elephants might access human habitats and block those as well. Driving the elephants deeper into the forest areas is seen as a key strategy to avoid future conflicts and promote coexistence.

This proactive step by the Karnataka government underscores a commitment to balancing wildlife conservation with human welfare, aiming to create a safer environment for both elephants and the communities living in proximity to forested regions.
