Kolkata's Minimum Temperature Climbs to 23°C, First Time Since November
The city of Kolkata experienced a notable shift in its weather pattern on Sunday, with the minimum temperature rising by 3 degrees to reach 23°C. This marks the first instance since November that the minimum temperature has touched this level, indicating a gradual warming trend as the season progresses.
Temperature Details and Meteorological Insights
While the minimum temperature increased, the maximum temperature saw a slight decrease, settling at 32.2°C. According to weather officials, this change is primarily due to the influx of westerly winds into south Bengal. HR Biswas, deputy director-general of meteorology, explained that these winds have replaced the cooler north-westerly winds, leading to warmer and drier conditions.
"There is slight moisture at the ground level. It is not sufficient to bring rainfall, though. The city is set to remain dry for the next four to five days," Biswas stated. He added that the minimum temperature is expected to hover around 23°C over the next 48 hours, but assured that there will not be any sharp rise in temperatures for now.
Regional Weather Contrasts and Recent Rainfall
In contrast to Kolkata's dry forecast, North Bengal may experience rainfall over the coming days, highlighting the diverse weather patterns across the region. This divergence underscores the complex meteorological dynamics at play in West Bengal.
Last week, Kolkata received drizzles, which were attributed to southerly winds blowing in from the sea. These winds carried moisture, and when combined with rising temperatures, led to cloud formation and light rain. However, the current shift to westerly winds has curtailed such moisture incursion, resulting in the anticipated dry spell.
Implications for Residents and Future Outlook
The gradual warming trend is expected to continue in the days ahead, as the warmer and drier winds persist. Residents should prepare for:
- Increased daytime warmth with minimal rainfall.
- Stable minimum temperatures around 23°C in the short term.
- Potential health considerations due to drier air and higher temperatures.
Weather monitoring will remain crucial, as any further changes in wind patterns could alter this forecast. For now, Kolkata braces for a period of dry and gradually warming weather, a significant departure from the cooler conditions experienced earlier in the season.
