Lucknow's CG City Urban Wetland Hosts Vibrant World Wetlands Day Celebration
A vibrant celebration of nature unfolded at the CG City Urban Wetland in Lucknow on Tuesday, drawing environmental enthusiasts, students, and families for a day dedicated to learning and awareness. The event was organized by the Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) to commemorate World Wetlands Day, emphasizing the critical importance of conservation and biodiversity in urban settings.
Early Morning Bird-Watching and Expert Insights
The festivities commenced at 7 a.m. with an engaging bird-watching session, where participants had the opportunity to observe various avian species in their natural habitat. Experts shared valuable information about bird behavior, wetland ecosystems, and their essential role in maintaining ecological balance. This hands-on experience provided attendees with a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness of nature.
Inauguration and Key Address by CM's Advisor
CM's advisor, Awanish Awasthi, inaugurated a souvenir shop and unveiled the CG City Urban Wetland wall during the event. He praised the wetland as an excellent example of balancing urban development with environmental protection, highlighting its significance in fostering sustainable growth. His remarks underscored the need for integrating ecological considerations into city planning.
Cleanliness Drive and Creative Competitions
Members of the Gomti task force conducted a cleanliness drive in collaboration with students, promoting community involvement in environmental stewardship. Following this, a painting competition allowed children to creatively express nature through colors and bird sketches. In the painting contest, Bhavika Yadav secured the first position, followed by Lakshmi Verma and Jhanvi. Meanwhile, in the extempore competition focused on environmental protection, Preeti Yadav won first prize, with Suhani Kumari and Mansi Prajapati placing second and third, respectively.
Panel Discussion on Wetland Conservation
A panel discussion on wetland conservation and biodiversity was also organized, featuring experts who stressed the multifaceted roles of wetlands. They emphasized how wetlands contribute to groundwater recharge, flood control, and climate regulation. Citizens were urged to take actionable steps, such as reducing plastic use, avoiding pollution of water bodies, and actively participating in protecting local ecosystems to mitigate environmental challenges.
Promoting Eco-Friendly Initiatives
LDA vice-chairman Prathamesh Kumar explained that the souvenir shop aimed to promote eco-friendly products and make conservation activities self-sustaining. This initiative reflects a broader effort to integrate sustainability into everyday practices and support local environmental projects.
Awards and Official Launches
Winners of the competitions were honored by housing commissioner Balkar Singh, LDA vice-chairman Prathamesh Kumar, and DFO Sitanshu Pandey. On this occasion, the wetland's official logo and a coffee table book were also launched, symbolizing a commitment to ongoing conservation efforts and public engagement. These launches aim to raise awareness and document the wetland's ecological value for future generations.
