Middle East Tensions Trigger Widespread Flight Cancellations from Chennai
In the wake of escalating tensions in the Middle East, flight operations to and from the region have been severely disrupted, with Chennai International Airport bearing a significant brunt of the impact. Massive Disruptions at Chennai Airport
Since Saturday, the aviation sector has faced a major setback, with 50 arrivals and 50 departures cancelled at Chennai International Airport until Monday morning. The international terminal presented a deserted appearance on Sunday, reflecting the scale of the disruptions. National carriers, including Air India and Indigo, along with other airlines, have suspended flights to key destinations such as Bahrain, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Kuwait, and Doha due to the closure of airspace in the UAE region.
Airlines Announce Widespread Cancellations
Several airlines have proactively cancelled their services in response to the volatile situation. Etihad Airways called off its flight to Abu Dhabi scheduled for 3 am on Monday, along with the return flight at 9 am. Similarly, Qatar Airways cancelled its flight to Doha set for 3.40 am. Other carriers, including Emirates, Salam Air, and Air Arabia, also joined in cancelling flights on Monday. An official from the Airports Authority of India (AAI) indicated that if conditions do not improve by Monday, evening flights might also be axed.
Notably, Gulf Air's flight to Muscat operated without any changes, highlighting the selective nature of the disruptions. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) reported that 350 flights operated by Indian domestic carriers were cancelled on Sunday nationwide, underscoring the broader impact on aviation.
