The water quality of Nagpur's prominent Ambazari Lake is experiencing a concerning and steady deterioration. This environmental decline is primarily attributed to substantial volumes of untreated sewage that continue to flow directly into the lake from areas under the jurisdiction of the Wadi Municipal Council.
Administrative Response and Inspection Drive
In response to the escalating pollution levels, concrete steps have been initiated to address the contamination. A key measure involves treating the polluted water through the establishment of a dedicated sewage treatment plant (STP), with plans for its systematic and scientific reuse. A comprehensive inspection of this critical project was conducted on Tuesday by a high-level team of officials.
The inspection panel included notable figures such as MLC Parinay Fuke, Collector Vipin Itankar, Municipal Commissioner Abhijeet Chaudhari, Deputy Conservator of Forests Vinita Vyas, Yash Kale, Wadi Municipal Council Chief Officer Dhabarde, and Range Forest Officer Sheetal Karnate, among others.

The alarming pollution issue at Ambazari Lake had previously garnered significant attention during a District Planning Committee meeting. Following this discussion, Guardian Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule issued a directive to the administration, urging them to take immediate and urgent action. During the site inspection, MLC Parinay Fuke emphasized the critical need for removing invasive water hyacinth and implementing more effective management systems. He stressed that mere discussions are insufficient, stating, "Discussions alone are not enough. Fuke further highlighted that Ambazari Lake is not just a tourist destination but a vital component of Nagpur's broader water management infrastructure, local biodiversity, and overall environmental health. The rapid and extensive spread of water hyacinth has nearly completely covered the lake's surface, blocking essential sunlight from penetrating the water. This phenomenon has led to a dangerous decline in dissolved oxygen levels, creating a severe threat to fish populations and other aquatic organisms.
This infestation has also resulted in the emission of foul odours and has increased the breeding of mosquitoes and various insects. These conditions directly impact the health and well-being of residents living near the lake and significantly disturb the local ecological balance.

Expressing deep concern over the lake's deteriorating condition and the loss of its natural beauty, Dr. Fuke directed officials to prepare a strict, time-bound action plan. This plan is to focus on the removal of water hyacinth using a combination of mechanical and biological methods to restore the lake's health and ecological function.
