Rajasthan Government Takes Action on Critical Groundwater Crisis in Sriganganagar District
In a significant development addressing a pressing environmental issue, Rajasthan's Groundwater Minister Kanhaiya Lal has announced that the state government is intensifying efforts to resolve the severe problem of zero or near-zero groundwater levels, which has led to widespread waterlogging in parts of Sriganganagar district. The minister made these remarks during the Question Hour in the legislative assembly, responding to supplementary questions raised by MLA Rupinder Singh Kunnar.
Impact on Agricultural Communities and Affected Constituencies
The crisis has rendered farming nearly impossible in large swathes of three key constituencies: Raisinghnagar, Suratgarh, and Karanpur. Minister Kanhaiya Lal confirmed that these areas are severely affected, with the near-zero groundwater levels creating unsustainable conditions for agriculture. This situation threatens the livelihoods of local farmers and the region's food security, highlighting the urgency of the government's intervention.
Root Causes of the Waterlogging Crisis
Explaining the underlying factors behind this alarming scenario, Kanhaiya Lal detailed several interconnected causes. The primary reasons include seepage from canals and the accumulation of rainwater, which have combined to exacerbate the waterlogging. Additionally, continuous flooding in Punjab's Muktsar district has caused a rise in water levels towards the south-west, directly impacting parts of Sriganganagar.
Record rainfall this year in the Sutlej, Ravi, and Beas rivers has further worsened conditions, leading to flood-like situations in Karanpur. This confluence of natural and infrastructural issues underscores the complexity of managing water resources in the region.
Government Initiatives and Strategic Measures
To tackle this multifaceted problem, the Sriganganagar district collector has constituted a joint inspection committee comprising officials from various departments. This committee is tasked with:
- Studying the impact of waterlogging on buildings and agriculture.
- Suggesting practical and sustainable solutions to mitigate the crisis.
In terms of immediate actions, drain construction works are currently being carried out in the Padampura and Sangeeta areas to address drainage issues. Furthermore, the government plans to undertake relining of the Indira Gandhi Canal, a critical step to prevent future seepage and improve water management efficiency.
Cross-State Collaboration and Ongoing Monitoring
Minister Lal emphasized that the committee will also visit affected areas in Punjab to study the management practices adopted there, fostering cross-state collaboration to learn from neighboring regions' experiences.
