Sonam Wangchuk, the renowned climate activist and education reformist from Ladakh, has strongly rebuffed critics who questioned his decision to break his 26-day hunger strike. In a pointed remark, Wangchuk asked, "Do I need a character certificate after 26 days of hunger?" The statement came shortly after he ended his indefinite fast on July 24, 2026.
The Context of the Hunger Strike
Wangchuk had launched the hunger strike to press for urgent action on climate change and the protection of Ladakh's fragile ecosystem. He also demanded the implementation of the region's special constitutional status and the establishment of a climate action plan. After 26 days of sustained protest, the central government agreed to form a high-level committee to address these issues, prompting Wangchuk to end his fast.

Some social media users and political opponents accused Wangchuk of lacking perseverance, suggesting that he gave up too soon. In response, Wangchuk emphasised the sacrifice involved in a 26-day fast, which he said required immense physical and mental strength. "I have spent 26 days without food to draw attention to the critical issues facing Ladakh and the planet. Those who have never fasted even for a day have no right to question my integrity," he stated.
