Green Party Blames Anti-Muslim Rhetoric for Edinburgh Attacks

A 36-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with a series of attacks in Edinburgh that left five Muslim men injured. The incidents, which occurred on June 19, are being investigated as potential hate crimes by counter-terrorism officers.

Polanski Points Finger at Public Figures

Green Party leader Zack Polanski directly blamed anti-Muslim rhetoric from politicians and public figures, including Elon Musk, for creating the conditions for the attacks. In a post on X, Polanski stated: "Let's be very clear that vicious anti-Muslim hatred by politicians and their trillionaire mate @elonmusk create the conditions for this kind of vile attack." He expressed solidarity with the victims and Muslim communities, writing: "Solidarity with all those affected and Muslim communities in Edinburgh and beyond."

Details of the Attacks

The violence began in Edinburgh's Sighthill area on Friday evening, where two men were injured and taken to the hospital. According to the Scottish Association of Mosques, the victims had been leaving Broomhouse Mosque when they were attacked, as reported by The Guardian. Police later received reports of further assaults in other parts of the city, including Telford Road and Leith Walk. Three more men were allegedly attacked during the incident spree.

The five victims, aged between 22 and 39, suffered a range of injuries. Three required hospital treatment, although police said none of the injuries were life-threatening. Officers arrested the suspect at around 9:30 pm after confronting him in the city. Social media footage appearing to show the incident circulated online, with one video showing a shirtless man carrying a long weapon and another showing a suspect being restrained by police.

Political Reaction

Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the attacks, stating that the suspect appeared to have been motivated by anti-Muslim hatred. "Absolutely appalling. No one should face violence on our streets," Starmer wrote on X. "I will not tolerate this. He will face the full force of the law."
