Agartala: Two suspected Bangladeshi smugglers lost their lives after Border Security Force (BSF) personnel opened fire in self-defence along the India-Bangladesh border in Tripura's Sepahijala district on Friday night. The incident occurred near the border wire fencing between Nabinpara and Bangaband under the Kamalasagar border outpost, a region notorious for rampant smuggling activities often facilitated by villagers living on both sides of the border.
Details of the Confrontation
According to reports, BSF jawans were conducting routine patrolling when they observed a group of 10 to 15 individuals secretly transferring goods across the border fence to their Indian counterparts under the cover of darkness. The smugglers reportedly turned aggressive and began pelting stones at the BSF troops, compelling the jawans to fire in self-defence. As a result, two Bangladeshi individuals sustained injuries and collapsed.
Discovery and Identification
Following the shooting, the BSF launched a search operation and discovered the injured persons. They were identified as Nabin Hussain (20) and Md Moorsalin (40). Both were rushed to Bishalgarh hospital, where doctors declared them brought dead. Police later visited the site to assess the situation and initiated an investigation into the involvement of Indian villagers in cross-border smuggling activities.
Confessions and Aftermath
Police reported that before their deaths, the suspected smugglers admitted to being from the Bangladeshi side of the border and confessed to their involvement in smuggling. Their bodies were handed over to the Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) after post-mortem examinations on Saturday, police added. The deaths of the two Bangladeshi nationals on Indian soil have created tension in the border villages. BSF officials have not yet issued a statement regarding the incident.
Context and Concerns
The area has long been a hotspot for cross-border smuggling, with local residents often aiding illegal activities due to the porous nature of the border. This incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by security forces in curbing such operations while maintaining peace along the international boundary.
