Israeli airstrikes in southern Lebanon on Friday killed at least 16 people and left several others injured, according to Al Jazeera. The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) stated that they conducted numerous overnight strikes in response to what they described as Hezbollah's repeated violations of the ceasefire.
Ceasefire Violations and Escalation
The strikes occurred despite a recent Iran-US deal that called for a cessation of hostilities between Israel and Lebanon. The IDF emphasized that the attacks were a direct response to Hezbollah's actions, which it deemed as breaching the terms of the ceasefire.
Iran-US Talks on Hold
Earlier on Friday, the Swiss Foreign Ministry confirmed that planned talks between the United States and Iran have been postponed. Switzerland, which was set to host the discussions, stated that it remains ready to facilitate the negotiations when they resume.
A White House spokesperson announced that US Vice President JD Vance will not depart for Switzerland as the plans for the technical talks have not been finalized. The spokesperson added that a US delegation is prepared to leave at the first available opportunity, but the logistics of the negotiations remain unpredictable.
Iran's Response
In Tehran, the Iranian Secretariat of the Supreme National Security Council warned that if the other side violates the agreement, countermeasures will be taken according to a predetermined plan. The council expressed complete distrust of the American side, citing its history of breaking treaties.
The developments come amid heightened tensions in the region, with the international community closely monitoring the situation. The postponement of the Iran-US talks and the continued Israeli strikes in Lebanon highlight the fragile nature of the ceasefire and the challenges in achieving lasting peace.
