Netanyahu Declares End to US Aid
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced a major policy shift on Tuesday, stating that Israel's strong economy no longer requires American financial assistance. He described the aid as "welfare" and expressed his desire to stop it. "Our economy is no longer a small economy... we can finance ourselves with this fraction of a per cent of our GDP that we receive from the United States. I want this process to start this year," Netanyahu said.
Opposition to Palestinian Statehood
Netanyahu reiterated his administration's firm opposition to the establishment of a Palestinian state. He emphasized, "Israel is the nation-state of the Jewish people. No Palestinian state will be established here." This statement aligns with his long-standing position on sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Active Security Policy and Regional Threats
The Prime Minister outlined an aggressive security posture, stating, "We will pursue an active security policy--we won't sit back and wait behind fences." He issued a direct warning regarding Iran's nuclear program, noting, "We entered Iran twice to save ourselves from destruction. There will be a third time if necessary." This underscores Israel's willingness to conduct pre-emptive strikes against perceived threats.
Military Presence in Lebanon and Gaza
Netanyahu confirmed that Israeli forces will maintain their positions in southern Lebanon, establishing a security belt about 10 kilometres inside Lebanese territory. He explained that this is done with the agreement of the Lebanese government, despite Hezbollah's opposition. Regarding the Gaza Strip, Netanyahu remained cryptic about rebuilding settlements, stating, "As for rebuilding settlements in Gaza, you have to be ready to act first and talk afterwards."
Diplomatic Agreements and Conditions for Withdrawal
The announcement follows a US-brokered framework agreement between Beirut and Tel Aviv aimed at long-term stability and demilitarization of Hezbollah. Under the accord, any Israeli troop withdrawal is contingent on the Lebanese government establishing specialized security zones under state military control.
