The US Department of Justice (DOJ) has made a significant new discovery in the long-running Jeffrey Epstein case, announcing on Tuesday that it has uncovered over one million additional documents that are potentially related to the convicted sex offender's network. The massive trove of new material means the full public release of all files, mandated by law, will be delayed by several more weeks as officials work to review them.
Massive Document Haul and Release Timeline
In a statement posted on social media platform X, the DOJ revealed that the US Attorney for the Southern District of New York and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) informed the department of the new cache. More than a million documents have been handed over for review under the recently passed Epstein Files Transparency Act, along with existing statutes and court orders.
The department stated that lawyers are now working around the clock to process the files, making legally required redactions to protect victims' identities. "Due to the massive volume of material, this process may take a few more weeks," the DOJ said, adding it is committed to full compliance with federal law.
Clarifications on Trump Links and a Fake Letter
This development follows last week's release of nearly 30,000 pages of Epstein-related documents. The DOJ took the unusual step of preemptively clarifying contents within those files, specifically addressing claims involving former President Donald Trump.
The department labeled certain allegations against Trump within the documents as "untrue and sensationalist," noting they were submitted to the FBI just before the 2020 election. It asserted these claims were "unfounded and false," arguing they would have been used against him politically if they held any credibility. Despite this, the DOJ released the documents in the name of transparency.
Among the recently released papers was a 2021 subpoena to Trump's Mar-a-Lago club, connected to the probe into Epstein's accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell. The files also contained a letter purportedly signed by "J Epstein" and addressed to convicted sex offender Larry Nassar, which made references to "our president." However, the DOJ confirmed the FBI has determined this letter to be a complete fabrication, postmarked three days after Epstein's death in 2019 and featuring handwriting inconsistent with his own.
New Details and High-Profile Names Surface
The ongoing document releases continue to shed light on Epstein's operations and associations. Previously unseen photos have emerged showing the financier with high-profile figures like pop legend Michael Jackson, Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger, and former US President Bill Clinton.
New witness testimonies from the files provide chilling details of Epstein's predatory pattern. One FBI agent's 2007 grand jury interview describes an allegation where Epstein recruited a 15-year-old girl for a topless massage. The agent noted Epstein preferred victims who were "thin and blonde and attractive." Another witness described Epstein as highly selective, focused on the age of the girls and once rejecting a potential masseur for being "too old" at just 23 years of age.
While thousands of pages have been made public, a substantial number of documents related to Epstein and Maxwell remain unpublished. The world now waits for the review of the latest million-document discovery, which promises to further unravel one of the most infamous criminal cases of the modern era.
