US Envoy Sergio Gor Says PM Modi's Visit 'Highly Anticipated'

US Ambassador Extends Invitation to PM Modi

US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor stated on Monday that the United States would "love to have" Prime Minister Narendra Modi visit the country again. Speaking at the IX USISPF Leadership Summit 2026 in Washington DC, Gor confirmed that Secretary of State Marco Rubio had already extended an invitation to PM Modi during his recent visit to India.

Interim Trade Deal Expected Soon

Gor expressed optimism about the interim India-US trade agreement, saying it would be concluded "sooner rather than later." He noted that USTR Jamieson Greer has the full confidence of President Donald Trump and that negotiations involve thousands of items between the two nations. "The fact that we've gone so far is a great sign for the relationship," Gor added.

President Trump Engaged on Bilateral Ties

Recounting his recent interaction with President Trump, Gor said, "I have been with the President for 10 years, so a large part of the conversation was like two friends catching up. I also told him about my visits to India and the growing trade relations." He emphasized that businesses from both countries are engaging weekly, creating a win-win situation.

PM Modi's December Visit for G20

Gor confirmed that PM Modi is expected to visit the US in December for the G20 Miami Summit, scheduled for December 14-15 at the Trump National Doral Miami resort. This will be the first G20 leaders' summit hosted by the US since 2009. Secretary Rubio extended the invitation on behalf of President Trump during his state visit to India from May 23-26.

Quad Meetings to Become Regular

Commenting on the upcoming Quad meeting in the Philippines, Gor said, "We aim to build upon what has already happened in New Delhi, including maritime options in Fiji. Pacific security is vitally important to all four nations. We want to make this a regular thing, not a one-off once or twice a year."

President Trump's India Visit Not During Midterms

When asked about President Trump's potential visit to India, Gor stated, "It's not any time during the midterms. It has to be somewhere next year. We would love to make that happen sooner rather than later."
