Minnesota Daycare Fraud Probe: YouTuber Nick Shirley Questions $4M Funding & State Website Outage
YouTuber Alleges Minnesota Daycare Fraud, State Website Crashes

Controversial YouTuber Nick Shirley has thrust Minnesota's childcare system into the national spotlight, making serious allegations of fraud and questionable oversight that point directly at the state's top leadership. His claims have triggered official investigations and a political firestorm, raising questions about millions in state funding.

Website Outage Sparks Suspicion After Viral Video

The controversy intensified when Minnesota's official childcare licensing webpage suddenly became inaccessible. This technical failure occurred roughly a week after Shirley posted a viral video detailing alleged fraud within the state's daycare system. The YouTuber insists the timing is not coincidental, suggesting the state may be attempting to obscure information.

State Representative Mary Franson amplified the issue by sharing a screenshot of the outage on social media platform X. She publicly demanded an explanation from Governor Tim Walz and the Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS). The DHS website displayed a message blaming "an unprecedented high volume of traffic" for the service disruption, promising it was being actively resolved.

Shirley reposted Franson's message, questioning what the governor might be trying to conceal. He believes the sudden website crash is a direct result of his investigative videos, which are forcing authorities to scrutinize the childcare framework more closely.

State Response and Investigations Underway

In reaction to the growing scandal, state officials confirmed they visited several daycare centers featured in Shirley's videos on Monday, December 29. CBS News reported that two of those facilities had already ceased operations earlier in the year.

Governor Tim Walz's office has firmly rejected Shirley's accusations. A spokesperson for Walz told Fox News that the governor is dedicated to eradicating fraud in state initiatives and has engaged an independent, third-party firm to audit government payments directed to high-risk programs.

Tikki Brown, Commissioner of Minnesota's Department of Children, Youth, and Families, also responded, stating, "While we have questions about some of the methods used in the video, we do take the concerns that the video raises about fraud very seriously."

Multi-Million Dollar Funding Under Scrutiny

Despite official denials, Shirley continues to press for answers. One facility he highlighted, the Quality Learning Center, reportedly held a license for 99 children. According to Shirley's investigation, this center received over $4 million in state funding. The YouTuber is demanding transparency on how these substantial public funds were utilized and whether adequate oversight mechanisms were functional.

The situation has also drawn commentary from the federal level. While former President Donald Trump has not spoken directly, the White House shared a post from U.S. Education Secretary Linda McMahon, who labeled the affair "a breathtaking failure that has happened under the watch" of Governor Walz.

As of now, state authorities confirm that reviews are ongoing, and no formal fraud charges have been filed. The case remains a developing story, highlighting the growing influence of social media investigators on public policy and accountability.
