Engineering Colleges Seek 10% Extra Intake Amid Delays

Chennai: In light of the delayed medical admissions and CBSE Class XII revaluation results, engineering colleges and deemed universities have urged the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) to permit a 10% increase in student intake this year.

The NEET re-exam is scheduled for June 21 after the cancellation of the May 3 test due to a question paper leak. This is expected to postpone admissions to medical and technical courses this year.

“Instead of postponing the counselling and keeping lakhs of engineering aspirants waiting, the AICTE should allow the top 200 ranked colleges and deemed universities in NIRF to enrol 10% additional intake. It would prevent vacancies in courses such as computer science engineering and other branches in top colleges after medical counselling,” said S Vaidhyasubramaniam, vice-chancellor of Sastra.

Engineering colleges are also worried about a chaotic admission season due to the delay in medical admissions. “The toppers might join computer science engineering in the counselling and might leave their seats if they get admission to MBBS. An additional 10% intake would be helpful to prevent vacancies in the top colleges,” said Abhay Meganathan, vice-chairman, Rajalakshmi Group of Institutions.

Private colleges consortium asked for a special window to fill vacancies after the medical admissions. “State govt should allow the engineering colleges to fill the vacant seats after medical counselling. Or else the most preferred courses will go vacant,” said P Selvaraj, secretary of consortium of self-financing professional, arts and science colleges.
