Kolkata: The price of white sliced bread (400 gm) is set to increase by Rs 4, from Rs 36 to Rs 40, effective Sunday. Premium varieties, including wholewheat and multigrain bread, will cost Rs 5 more. While one company, Moreish, has already implemented the price hike, five others — Modern, Metro Gold, Britannia, Barron, and Subhnarayan — will revise prices from June 21.
Reasons for Price Revision
Manufacturers have cited a sharp rise in input costs, including ingredients and packaging material, as the primary reason for the price revision. The six brands together control around 60% of the Kolkata market, which consumes approximately 3 lakh loaves per day.
Market Impact
This price increase is expected to affect daily consumers across the city. The bread market in Kolkata is highly competitive, with these six brands holding a significant share. The revision comes amid broader inflationary pressures on essential commodities.
