Maruti Swift Dominates India's Used Car Market Across Regions
Maruti Swift Tops India's Used Car Market in 2025

The Maruti Suzuki Swift has emerged as the undisputed leader in India's used car market, topping sales charts in both metro and non-metro regions. According to the Cars24-Team BHP Gears of Growth report, the Swift holds a 4.93 percent share of all used car transactions nationally in 2025, outperforming every other model across geographies.

Unmatched Lead Across All Markets

In metro markets, the Swift commands a 5 percent share, while in non-metro areas it leads at 4.80 percent. The second-placed Wagon R trails significantly at 3.47 percent nationally. In non-metro markets, the gap widens further with the Swift Dzire at 3.08 percent. This margin is substantial in a market where the top 10 models are separated by only about three percentage points.

Below the top spot, buyer preferences diverge sharply. Metro buyers favor the Honda City and Baleno, linked to upgrade demand and automatic gearboxes. Non-metro buyers rank the Swift Dzire second and include the Alto in their top 10, reflecting value-led choices and low running costs. Yet both segments converge on the Swift as their first choice.

Why the Swift Leads

The report highlights several factors behind the Swift's dominance. Hatchbacks account for 52 percent of used car transactions, with SUVs at 32 percent and sedans at 16 percent. The Swift, a hatchback, sits at the center of this demand. Manual gearboxes, which dominate 72 percent of used car sales, are common in Swifts, offering fuel efficiency and easy repairs.

Maruti's extensive service network and high resale value also contribute. The Swift has been sold in large volumes since the mid-2000s, ensuring parts availability and trust among buyers. The report attributes the Swift's lead to its appeal across price points and age groups.

Limitations and Future Trends

The data is based on Cars24's internal transactions from over 33 million users as of December 2025, not national registrations. The Swift's lead is partly due to its high new-car sales volume. However, SUV share has more than doubled from 15 percent in 2023 to 32 percent in 2025, suggesting the hatchback's dominance may wane as newer SUVs enter the used market.

For now, the Swift remains the top choice for used car buyers across India, bridging the gap between different market segments.
