The Railway Board has given its approval for the establishment of a new coaching depot at the Velankanni railway station, situated in the Nagapattinam district under the Trichy railway division. This development comes in response to the increasing demand for additional train services in the Cauvery delta region, which encompasses Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai, and Karaikal.
Project Cost and Scope
The new pit line, estimated at Rs48.9 crore, has been proposed with comprehensive infrastructure in mind. The plan includes civil works, mechanical machinery and plants, power supply arrangements, and testing facilities for train lighting and air-conditioning systems of coaches.
Phased Development
In the first phase, construction will involve one pit line, one stabling line, and a high roof covered shed designed for scheduled maintenance and repair of coaches. The second phase will add another pit line along with three additional stabling lines and sheds. These pit lines are capable of handling modern rolling stock and contemporary train sets.
Expected Benefits
The upcoming facility is anticipated to enable the introduction of more train services, thereby improving rail connectivity to key tourist and pilgrimage destinations. Notable sites include the Basilica of Our Lady of Good Health in Velankanni, Nagore Dargah, and the Thirunallar Saturn temple.
Regional Impact
Once operational, this will be the third coaching depot in the Trichy division, joining existing depots in Trichy and Villupuram. The initiative underscores the railway's commitment to enhancing infrastructure in the region.
