Travis Kelce has no problem admitting he's playing second fiddle these days. On the May 13 episode of New Heights, the Kansas City Chiefs tight end joked with his brother Jason and guest Colin Jost about being the lesser-known half of his relationship with fiancée Taylor Swift. The conversation also opened up about their recent London getaway, which included Shakespeare, a standout Indian meal, and a celebrity birthday party.
Why did Travis Kelce call himself the 'less famous' one in his relationship?
Travis Kelce raised the topic while comparing experiences with Jost, who has been married to Scarlett Johansson since 2020. 'As two guys who are also of the plus one fraternity and have the same experience, how nice is it to be less famous in your relationship?' Kelce asked.
Jost did not hesitate. The comedian called it a 'huge relief,' though he admitted fame works differently for him than it does for Johansson. Because of his years on television with Saturday Night Live, strangers often approach him casually in public. Johansson, meanwhile, exists at such a high celebrity level that some people struggle to believe they are even seeing her in person.
'It's really funny because I think I'm probably almost approached more because she's less approachable,' Jost pointed out. 'Because I'm on TV… people are just like, I'm in their living room, so they were just like, 'Hey, what's up, man? How's going?' She's actually almost, like, so famous that they don't believe it a lot of times.'
The discussion also revealed an unexpected downside. Jost admitted his marriage has changed parts of his stand-up material because audiences no longer accept traditional relationship jokes aimed at Johansson.
'It was hard as a standup,' he said. 'Because I would have jokes about either the idea of dating or the idea of marriage or what that is. I can't be like, 'She's nagging me about this!' Everyone's like, 'Shut the f— up!' It eliminated that part of standup.'
The episode arrived just days after Kelce returned from London with Taylor Swift. He described the trip in relaxed detail, from seeing Sadie Sink perform in Romeo & Juliet to eating at Gymkhana, the Michelin-starred Indian restaurant he called 'f---ing remarkable.' Kelce said he skipped the questions and trusted the table's choices, only asking how spicy each dish would be.
