Cup Bashi Movie Review: A Feel-Good But Predictable Saas-Bahu Story

Cup Bashi is a family drama that delivers a lovely message, albeit in a woefully predictable manner. The film ditches the usual romantic chemistry angle and instead focuses on the chemistry between the newlywed bride and her mother-in-law. This otherworldly premise is achieved by bending convenient storytelling to its utmost limit.

Plot Overview

Amruta (Pooja Sawant), a progressive and successful Radio Jockey, remains unmarried due to a condition she proposes to her future in-laws. Enter Aruna (Nirmitee Sawant), a mother who has fixated upon Amruta as the ideal match for her son. The plot intertwines with the consequences of lies and maintains firm faith in astrology and omens.

Performances

Pooja Sawant and Nirmitee Sawant deliver some fruitful moments, but they alone cannot hold the entire film aloft. The supporting cast gives hammed performances, leaving much to be desired. The lack of a B-story does significant harm to the film's flow.

Music and Direction

The song and dance numbers are underwhelming, and barring the end, there is little to note. Director Vaibhav R. Chinchalkar keeps the film feel-good in all aspects, going out of its way not to ruffle any feathers. It affirms the beliefs of its target audience and, in certain parts, even talks down to them.

Final Verdict

Cup Bashi is a preachy yet true-to-genre saas-bahu story with a twist. It is recommended for a feel-good day at the movies, but don't expect any surprises. The entire film plays out on a familiar beat, to the point where one can predict the end 20 minutes into the runtime.
