According to the Hindu calendar, Ganga Dussehra is celebrated on the tenth day (Dashami Tithi) of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Jyeshtha. This major festival honors Goddess Ganga, who descended to Earth on this auspicious day. In the Gregorian calendar, the festival typically falls in May or June. This year, Ganga Dussehra will be celebrated on May 25, 2026.
Who is Goddess Ganga?
According to the sacred text Mahabharata, Goddess Ganga was the mother of Bhishma Pitamah and the wife of Shantanu. The Ganga is considered the holiest river in the world. She emerged from Lord Vishnu's foot, and Lord Shiva held her in his matted hair to break her fall from heaven.
Ganga Dussehra: History
According to Hindu mythology, King Bhagiratha fervently observed fasts and pleaded to Lord Brahma to bring the Ganga from heaven to Earth. His goal was to lift the curse that Sage Kapila had placed on the souls of his ancestors. Lord Brahma, recognizing Bhagiratha's devotion, granted his request. Lord Shiva then received the vast Ganga in his matted hair and gently released her to Earth. Thus, Ganga Dussehra commemorates the moment when the holy Ganga river descended from the heavens to atone for humanity's sins.
