A 26-day-old newborn, admitted in critical condition to the Community Health Centre (CHC) Cholapur in Varanasi on May 14, has been successfully treated and discharged. The infant was referred from a private clinic to the Pediatric OPD, where Dr. Akanksha Singh examined the child and identified severe jaundice and acute anaemia. Yellowing had spread to the palms and soles, indicating hyperbilirubinemia.
Diagnosis and Treatment
Laboratory tests revealed a haemoglobin level of 5.1 gram per decilitre and serum bilirubin at 14 milligram per decilitre. Due to severe anaemia and hyperbilirubinemia, doctors performed High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), which suggested haemolytic anaemia and possible β-Thalassemia. The medical team immediately initiated intensive phototherapy and administered two Packed Red Blood Cell (PRBC) transfusions at 24-hour intervals.
Recovery and Discharge
Following treatment, the infant’s haemoglobin rose to 11.4 gram per decilitre, and a remarkable improvement was observed. The child remained under continuous medical supervision and was discharged in a satisfactory condition. Dr. R.B. Yadav, Superintendent of CHC Cholapur, confirmed the successful outcome.
Chief Medical Officer Dr. Rajesh Prasad stated, “Continuous efforts are being made to strengthen specialist medical services at the district’s community health centres.” This case highlights the importance of timely intervention and advanced diagnostic tools in managing neonatal emergencies.
