Delhi recorded a maximum temperature of 44 degrees Celsius on Monday, the highest of the season, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a yellow alert for heatwave conditions over the next four days. In response, the Ayush Vertical under the Directorate General of Health Services, in coordination with the Ministry of Ayush, has released a public health advisory recommending 12 foods and drinks to help regulate body temperature and prevent heat-related illnesses.
Ayurvedic Recommendations for Heat Protection
The advisory emphasizes adequate hydration, avoiding direct sunlight during peak hours, wearing light cotton clothing, and consuming seasonal fruits and electrolyte-rich fluids. The Ayurveda section specifically recommends the following items to be added to the daily diet during extreme heat.
1. Buttermilk (Chaas)
Buttermilk is a natural, cooling, and hydrating drink that helps prevent dehydration. It contains water, electrolytes, calcium, and potassium, which restore hydration and maintain fluid balance.
2. Coconut Water
Coconut water is refreshing and packed with essential electrolytes like potassium, sodium, magnesium, and calcium. It helps restore lost fluids and supports muscle and nerve function.
3. Lemon-Based Drinks
Drinks like lemonade, nimbu pani, and lemon mint coolers help replenish fluids and maintain water balance, especially when mixed with salt or natural sweeteners.
4. Nimbukaphala Panaka
This traditional Ayurvedic beverage is made with lemon, water, natural sweeteners, and cooling spices like fennel, cardamom, and cumin. It helps refresh the body and prevent heat-induced tiredness.
5. Amra Prapanaka (Aam Panna)
Prepared from raw mango, water, and spices, this drink helps maintain fluid balance and replace salts and minerals lost through sweating, reducing weakness caused by extreme heat.
6. Chincha Panaka
Made with tamarind, water, sweeteners, and mild spices, this traditional drink reduces body heat and provides instant freshness during hot afternoons.
7. Cucumber
Cucumber is nearly 95% water, making it highly hydrating. It also supports digestion and reduces bloating, acidity, and constipation common in summer.
8. Watermelon
With 90-92% water content, watermelon provides instant freshness and reduces body heat. It is rich in vitamin C, vitamin A, potassium, and antioxidants like lycopene, which boost immunity and protect against heat stress.
9. Lime
Lime is often underrated but provides instant freshness and helps reduce internal heat. It is commonly used in nimbu pani and summer coolers.
10. Musk Melon (Cantaloupe)
Musk melon contains around 90% water and is rich in vitamin A, vitamin C, potassium, and antioxidants, aiding hydration and overall health.
11. Ash Gourd
Ash gourd is valued for its natural cooling effect, reducing body heat and providing relief from hot weather. Its high water and fiber content benefit digestion and gut health.
12. Tomatoes
Tomatoes are rich in water, vitamins, and antioxidants, helping the body stay cool and hydrated. They support immunity and maintain electrolyte balance in high temperatures.
The advisory urges the public to incorporate these foods and drinks into their daily routine to combat the ongoing heatwave in Delhi and surrounding regions.
