WHO warns against alcohol near water on World Drowning Prevention Day

The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a stark warning on World Drowning Prevention Day, urging people not to consume alcohol when near or in water bodies. According to WHO, alcohol consumption significantly increases the risk of drowning, especially among adults. The global health body emphasized that even small amounts of alcohol can impair judgment, coordination, and reaction time, making water activities dangerous.

Alcohol as a Leading Risk Factor

Alcohol is a known contributing factor in many drowning incidents worldwide. The WHO noted that studies show alcohol involvement in up to 50% of adolescent and adult drowning deaths. Drinking before swimming or boating heightens the likelihood of accidents, including falls into water, hypothermia, and inability to swim effectively. The organization advises complete avoidance of alcohol around any body of water, whether pools, lakes, rivers, or oceans.

Global Drowning Statistics

Drowning is a leading cause of unintentional injury death globally, claiming more than 236,000 lives each year, according to WHO data. This makes it the third leading cause of unintentional injury death worldwide, with the highest rates among children aged 1–4 years. However, alcohol-related drownings disproportionately affect adults, especially men. The majority of drownings occur in low- and middle-income countries, but alcohol is a universal risk factor.

Prevention Tips from WHO

In addition to avoiding alcohol, the WHO recommends multiple layers of protection to prevent drowning. These include installing barriers (such as pool fencing), teaching basic swimming and water safety skills, training bystanders in rescue and resuscitation, and enforcing safe boating regulations. The organization also calls for stronger public awareness campaigns about the dangers of mixing alcohol with water activities.

“On World Drowning Prevention Day, we remind everyone that drowning is preventable. We urge people to never drink alcohol when swimming, boating, or supervising children near water,” said Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General. “It takes seconds for a tragedy to occur. Stay alert, stay sober, and stay safe.”

Call to Action

The WHO is calling on governments, communities, and individuals to take concrete actions to reduce drowning deaths. This includes implementing the organization’s recommendations as part of national water safety plans. The day serves as a reminder that simple measures, such as avoiding alcohol near water, can save lives. The WHO will continue to advocate for policy changes and public education to address this preventable epidemic.
