Major Disaster Management Exercise Conducted at Ahmedabad's International Airport
A significant multi-agency disaster management drill took place at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (SVPIA) in Ahmedabad on Wednesday. This exercise was designed to rigorously assess the preparedness and coordination capabilities of various agencies in the event of natural calamities.
Coordinated Effort by National and State Authorities
The drill was organized by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) in close collaboration with the Airports Authority of India (AAI), Gujarat State Disaster Management Authority (GSDMA), and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). It centered around a multi-hazard scenario that simulated an earthquake and its subsequent cascading impacts, providing a realistic test environment for emergency response teams.
Evaluation of Response Mechanisms and Protocols
During the exercise, key aspects of disaster management were put to the test, including:
- Response mechanisms to ensure swift and effective action during crises.
- Implementation of the Incident Response System (IRS) to streamline command and control.
- Communication protocols to maintain clear and efficient information flow among agencies.
- Resource mobilisation to guarantee timely deployment of necessary equipment and personnel.
Officials from multiple central and state government departments actively participated, alongside teams from the NDRF, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), police, and fire services. This broad involvement highlighted the collaborative nature of the drill, aiming to foster seamless inter-agency cooperation.
Identifying Gaps and Enhancing Readiness
Authorities emphasized that the exercise served a crucial purpose in identifying potential gaps in current disaster response strategies. By simulating a high-stakes scenario, the drill helped strengthen coordination between different agencies, ensuring that all parties are aligned in their efforts to protect lives and critical infrastructure during emergencies. The insights gained are expected to lead to improved protocols and reinforced readiness for future incidents, ultimately enhancing public safety in the region.
