Railways Relocates Bengaluru's Mega Coach Terminal to Yelahanka Citing Accessibility

In a significant infrastructure decision, the Indian Railways has officially shifted the location of India's proposed mega coach terminal from Devanahalli to Yelahanka in north Bengaluru. Union Minister of State for Railways V Somanna made the announcement on Tuesday, citing logistical challenges and distance from the city center as primary reasons for the relocation.

Decision Driven by Practical Considerations

The terminal was originally planned at Devanahalli, but railway authorities determined the distance from Bengaluru's core areas and associated logistical complications made that location unsuitable for the massive project. "The distance from Bengaluru and logistical challenges made the location unsuitable," Somanna stated during his announcement.

The new location at Yelahanka, situated near the existing Rail Wheel Factory, offers superior accessibility and better integration with Bengaluru's established rail network. This strategic positioning is expected to enhance operational efficiency and passenger convenience once the terminal becomes operational.

Project Scope and Financial Implications

The mega coach terminal represents a substantial infrastructure investment with an estimated cost of Rs 5,754 crore. This ambitious project is designed to significantly upgrade Bengaluru's rail infrastructure capacity and modernize coach maintenance facilities in the region.

Minister Somanna confirmed that tenders for the project will be floated soon, marking the next critical phase in bringing this infrastructure vision to reality. The terminal is expected to create numerous employment opportunities and stimulate economic activity in the Yelahanka region.

Additional Railway Developments Announced

During the same event, the Union Minister inaugurated several other railway initiatives in Bengaluru:

  • Flagged off stoppages for four pairs of express trains at Nayandahalli station
  • Inaugurated a railway overbridge between Vijayanagar and Padarayanapura constructed at a cost of Rs 14 crore
  • Announced plans to quadruple the Bengaluru–Tumakuru railway line
  • Revealed intentions to conduct a survey for a proposed rail link between Whitefield and Kolar

These parallel developments underscore the railways' comprehensive approach to enhancing Bengaluru's rail connectivity and infrastructure. The quadrupling of the Bengaluru-Tumakuru line particularly promises to significantly increase rail capacity and reduce congestion on this important corridor.

The relocation decision reflects a pragmatic approach to infrastructure planning, prioritizing accessibility and operational efficiency over initial proposals. As Bengaluru continues to expand rapidly, such strategic infrastructure decisions will play a crucial role in maintaining the city's connectivity and supporting its growth trajectory.
