Southern Railway Implements Comprehensive Relief Plan for Chennai Suburban Commuters
Southern Railway has launched a series of targeted measures to address the significant challenges faced by regular suburban train commuters on the Chennai Beach-Tambaram corridor. These initiatives come in response to over a week of severe hardships caused by reduced train operations, which were necessitated by ongoing redevelopment work at Egmore railway station.
Enhanced Bus Services for Peak-Hour Travel
To mitigate the disruption, Southern Railway is introducing 20 special peak-hour bus services operated by MTC. These buses will run at seven-minute intervals between 6:40 am and 9:40 am from Tambaram towards Chennai Beach, starting this Saturday. In the return direction, services will operate from 5 pm to 8 pm. A key benefit is that railway ticket holders and season pass holders can travel free of cost on these buses.
The special buses will make stops at several key MTC bus stops, including:
- Tambaram Sanitorium
- Chromepet
- Pallavaram
- Tirusulam
- Guindy
- Ezhilagam
- Secretariat
- Parry’s Corner
Officials noted that some of these buses will also be routed via T Nagar to provide additional coverage and convenience for commuters.
Introduction of Fast Local Trains
In addition to the bus services, Southern Railway will operate five 15-car fast local trains on the fast line between Tambaram and Beach during peak hours. These trains are designed to complement the revised schedule and will stop at major stations such as Mambalam, Guindy, and Egmore. This strategic move reduces travel time significantly, with the entire stretch covered in 60 minutes instead of the regular 75-minute trips.
The schedule for these fast trains is as follows:
- Departures from Tambaram: 6:40 am, 7:10 am, 8:10 am, 8:55 am, and 9:15 am.
- Departures from Chennai Beach: 5:15 pm, 5:30 pm, 6:10 pm, 7:10 pm, and 8 pm.
Adjustments to Express Train Timings
To further alleviate congestion on the fast line at Chennai Egmore during peak hours, Southern Railway has revised the departure timing of the Cholan Express (22675) to 10:15 am, effective this Saturday. Additionally, the Nellai Express (12632) and Pothigai Express (12661) will now be operated from Tambaram station, providing alternative options for long-distance travelers.
Background on Service Reductions and Commuter Impact
The need for these measures stems from substantial reductions in train operations due to the Egmore station redevelopment project. Initially, services on the Chennai Beach–Tambaram–Chengalpet stretch were cut from 204 to 164 trains, and further reduced to 115, causing severe hardship for thousands of daily commuters. Southern Railway's earlier contingency plan, which involved introducing shuttle services, did not yield the desired results, prompting the development of these latest initiatives to restore normalcy and improve travel efficiency.
