Firoz Merchant is an Indian billionaire businessman and dedicated philanthropist residing in Dubai. He established the Pure Gold Group in 1989, transforming it into a premier jewellery retail chain boasting more than 170 stores across 13 countries globally. Beyond his commercial success, Merchant has cultivated an enduring legacy of philanthropy, with a particular focus on debt settlement for incarcerated individuals and various humanitarian causes within the UAE.
Releasing Insolvent Inmates Across the Emirates
Merchant's charitable initiative, launched in 2008, has been instrumental in securing the release of over 20,000 inmates detained for financial reasons throughout the UAE. This program is executed in close coordination with relevant authorities and in partnership with the Khalifa Foundation, spanning multiple emirates including Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, and Ras Al Khaimah.
During Ramadan 2026, 497 inmates have already been released, with additional cases currently under review for potential liberation during the holy month. The scale of this effort was particularly notable in 2025, when 2,972 inmates representing more than 50 different nationalities were freed. A total allocation of Dhs2.4 million was dedicated to settling their outstanding debts. On February 18, the first day of Ramadan, Merchant convened with officials from the Cancer Patient Care Society in Abu Dhabi to explore effective mechanisms for providing financial assistance to patients grappling with mounting treatment costs.
This builds upon his previous healthcare contributions; in 2025, he donated Dhs1 million through the Dubai Charity Association to cover dialysis and related medical expenses for 11 patients in need of financial support. The 2026 campaign therefore seamlessly integrates two vital strands of assistance: liberating individuals detained due to unpaid financial obligations and supporting patients who cannot afford essential, life-saving medical care.
