India at UN: FATF credibility questioned out of fear

India has asserted at the United Nations that efforts to question the credibility of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) often betray a fear of being placed under scrutiny. Speaking at a UN session, Indian representative Harish emphasized that such attempts undermine global counter-terrorism efforts.

FATF under attack

Harish noted that in the current era of technological advancements, crowdfunding platforms and prepaid instruments have become central to the funding infrastructure of global terrorist operations. He argued that those who seek to weaken FATF's authority are likely trying to avoid accountability for their own lapses in combating terrorist financing.

Technological challenges

The Indian envoy highlighted how modern financial tools, including digital crowdfunding and prepaid cards, are increasingly exploited by terror networks. He called for enhanced international cooperation to address these emerging threats and stressed the importance of FATF's role in setting global standards.

India's stance

India has been a strong proponent of FATF's mandate and has consistently supported measures to choke terrorist funding. The statement at the UN reflects New Delhi's commitment to global security and its concern over any dilution of anti-terror financing norms.
