Operation Amistad: India's Rapid Response to Venezuela Earthquake
India launched 'Operation Amistad' on June 26, 2026, to provide urgent humanitarian assistance to earthquake-hit Venezuela. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed that two C-17 aircraft of the Indian Air Force departed for Venezuela on the morning of June 26 as part of the operation.
The relief mission includes an Indian Army Field Hospital Unit and over 35 tons of supplies, comprising medicines, medical equipment, and other essential relief materials. External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar announced the operation on social media, stating that the assistance is aimed at supporting post-earthquake relief efforts in Venezuela.
Details of the Assistance
The two C-17 Globemaster III aircraft, operated by the Indian Air Force, carry a fully functional field hospital unit from the Indian Army's Army Dental Corps and other medical personnel. The over 35 tons of cargo include emergency medicines, surgical supplies, water purification systems, and shelter materials.
The MEA statement emphasized that the operation reflects India's commitment to being a first responder in humanitarian crises, especially in the Latin American region. This is one of the largest relief missions dispatched by India to South America.
Diplomatic and Strategic Context
Operation Amistad (meaning 'friendship' in Spanish) underscores India's growing diplomatic ties with Venezuela and the broader Latin American region. The earthquake, which struck earlier in June 2026, caused widespread devastation, with thousands displaced and critical infrastructure damaged.
Dr. S. Jaishankar noted that the operation demonstrates India's solidarity with the Venezuelan people during their time of need. The relief mission is expected to arrive in Venezuela within hours, where local authorities will coordinate distribution.
India's Humanitarian Aid Track Record
India has a history of rapid disaster response, including operations in Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Turkey. Operation Amistad adds to this legacy, showcasing the Indian Armed Forces' capability to deploy medical and relief units swiftly. The C-17 aircraft, known for their strategic airlift capacity, enable the transport of heavy equipment and large teams.
The mission also involves coordination with the Venezuelan government and international agencies to ensure effective delivery. The MEA confirmed that additional assistance may be provided based on evolving needs.
