India Cautions Citizens in Iran Against Unauthorized Border Travel

The Indian Embassy in Tehran has issued a renewed and emphatic advisory, strongly cautioning all Indian citizens currently residing in or visiting Iran against attempting to cross any of the country's land borders without explicit prior coordination and knowledge of the diplomatic mission.

In a statement released on Monday, March 16, 2026, the Embassy reiterated its earlier advisory from March 9, stating, "all Indian nationals currently in Iran are strictly advised not to approach or attempt to cross any land border of Iran for onward travel without prior and explicit coordination with the Embassy of India, Tehran."

Risks of Uncoordinated Movement

The advisory highlighted significant risks associated with unauthorized border crossings. Indian nationals who attempt to leave Iran via land borders without the guidance of the Embassy are highly likely to encounter serious logistical and immigration difficulties, the statement warned.

It further clarified that "the Embassy will not be in a position to provide assistance once individuals move outside Iranian territory without prior coordination." This underscores the critical importance of adhering to official protocols to ensure safety and avoid potential legal complications.

Ongoing Coordination and Community Support

The Embassy assured that it remains in regular contact with members of the Indian community in Iran and is undertaking coordinated arrangements wherever necessary. "Uncoordinated movement toward land borders is strongly discouraged," the statement emphasized, urging all nationals to strictly follow Embassy advisories and remain in touch through official channels before undertaking any travel.

This advisory comes amid ongoing monitoring of the regional situation. In an Inter-Ministerial Briefing on Recent Developments in West Asia, the Ministry of External Affairs provided an update, confirming that Indian Missions are in close contact with the Indian community. The MEA noted that over 550 Indian nationals in Iran have crossed into Armenia through the land border with facilitation from the Embassy, while more than 90 have crossed into Azerbaijan.

Operational Status and Student Safety

The Embassy of India in Tehran remains fully operational. Over recent days, it has actively relocated Indian students from locations outside Tehran to safer places within Iran, demonstrating proactive measures to ensure the well-being of citizens.

All Indian nationals in Iran are therefore urged to prioritize their safety by heeding these advisories and maintaining communication with the Embassy to navigate any travel plans effectively.
