Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi on Thursday visited the Indian Visa Centre (IVAC) at Jamuna Future Park in Dhaka to inspect visa operations, shortly after presenting his credentials to Bangladeshi President Mohammed Shahabuddin. The visit underscores India's commitment to enhancing consular services and people-to-people connectivity between the two nations.
Credentials Ceremony and Presidential Meeting
Earlier in the day, Trivedi was formally welcomed to Bangabhaban, the presidential palace, with a ceremonial guard of honour. He then met President Shahabuddin and presented his Letters of Credence. During the meeting, President Shahabuddin expressed confidence that Trivedi would contribute significantly to the development of bilateral relations during his tenure. The high commissioner is scheduled to interact with the media later.
Arrival and Background
Trivedi arrived in Dhaka by road on June 12, entering Bangladesh through the Petrapole-Benapole border. He succeeds Pranay Kumar Verma, who served as Indian high commissioner to Bangladesh for four years until May this year. The Ministry of External Affairs announced Trivedi's appointment on April 27, and he received his Letters of Credence from President Droupadi Murmu on June 5.
Political Career and Experience
A veteran politician, Trivedi brings extensive administrative experience to the role. He served as Union Minister for Railways and Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare in the Manmohan Singh-led government. Trivedi represented West Bengal in both the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha, winning from the Barrackpore constituency from 2009 to 2019. He was honoured with the Outstanding Parliamentarian Award for 2016-17 and chaired several parliamentary forums, including the Indo-European Union Parliamentary Forum. In 2021, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party after resigning from the All India Trinamool Congress.
