Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Issues Urgent Evacuation Call for Students in Iran

In a significant development, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has made a pressing appeal to Kashmiri students currently studying in Iran, urging them to leave the country at the earliest possible opportunity. The call comes in response to advisories issued by the Government of India regarding the evolving situation in the region.

Clear Warning Against Ignoring Official Advisories

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, CM Omar Abdullah emphasized the critical nature of the government's travel advisory. "I am stating this very clearly—they should not ignore the Government of India's advisory. Otherwise, it could become a serious issue for us tomorrow," he warned. The Chief Minister stressed that students must act swiftly while conditions in Iran remain relatively stable and airports are still operational.

"They should book their tickets and return without delay. If the situation normalizes, they can always go back later," Abdullah added, highlighting the precautionary approach. He underscored that the Ministry of External Affairs did not issue the advisory without substantial reason, noting that if conditions deteriorate in Iran, ensuring safe evacuation could become extremely challenging.

National Conference President Echoes the Appeal

Adding weight to the urgency, National Conference president Dr. Farooq Abdullah also appealed to the students to return as soon as possible. He pointed out the practical difficulties that could arise if airspace closures occur. "If the airspace is closed tomorrow, their parents will be anxious and raise concerns here. It is far better to leave early because once flights are suspended, evacuation becomes an immensely difficult task," he explained.

Dr. Abdullah further emphasized that the advisory should be taken with utmost seriousness, as it is designed to preempt potential crises. "The advisory has already been issued, and it must be heeded promptly to avoid future complications," he stated.

Key Recommendations for Students

The joint appeal from both political leaders outlines several critical points for Kashmiri students in Iran:

  • Immediate action: Students are urged to book return tickets without delay.
  • Adherence to advisories: Strictly follow the Government of India's travel guidelines.
  • Proactive evacuation: Leave while airports remain open and the situation is manageable.
  • Parental concerns: Consider the anxiety and potential outcry from families if evacuation becomes hindered.

This coordinated message underscores the heightened awareness of geopolitical risks and the priority placed on student safety by Jammu and Kashmir's leadership. The appeal reflects a broader strategy to mitigate risks associated with international instability, ensuring that citizens abroad are protected through timely and decisive action.
