Maharashtra Election Officials Selected as International Observers for Colombian Congress Polls
A distinguished five-member delegation from Maharashtra, spearheaded by the state's Chief Electoral Officer S Chockalingam, has been officially chosen to serve as international observers for the upcoming elections to the Congress in Colombia. These pivotal elections are scheduled to take place on March 8, marking a significant moment in Colombia's democratic process.
Initiative and International Engagement
This selection falls under the Election Commission of India's Global Engagement for Electoral Excellence (GEEE) initiative. The GEEE program is meticulously designed to study and analyze international best practices in electoral management while simultaneously disseminating India's extensive institutional experience and expertise on a global scale. As part of this strategic initiative, specific countries have been assigned to state chief electoral officers for focused and in-depth engagement. In this framework, the state of Maharashtra has been allocated to the Republic of Colombia, fostering a direct channel for electoral knowledge exchange.
Delegation Composition and Mission Details
The delegation will participate in the international observation mission from March 6 to 10. The invitation was formally extended by the president of the National Electoral Council of Colombia specifically for the elections to the Colombian Congress, as confirmed by a government resolution issued by the General Administration department. The delegation comprises:
- Ashirwad Kumar, Solapur collector and district election officer
- Manohar Ramchandra Parkar, joint chief electoral officer and deputy secretary
- Priyesh Lakhuchand Mahajan, electoral registration officer for the 59-Ramtek Assembly constituency
- Sagar Ashok Shirke, booth level officer (Talathi-Ozar, Niphad)
This program has received all necessary clearances from the Ministry of External Affairs and formal approval from the Election Commission through the Indian International Institute of Democracy and Election Management (IIIDEM).
Objectives and Official Arrangements
Officials have clarified that the delegation's primary role will be to observe the electoral process and engage in the exchange of insights on election management practices. This endeavor is a crucial component of India's broader international cooperation in the field of electoral administration. The entire duration of the visit will be officially treated as official duty. All associated expenses will be borne jointly by the Election Commission of India and the Maharashtra government under the designated election administration budget head, ensuring a seamless and fully supported mission.
