Netanyahu's Traditional Indian Attire Gesture for Modi During Historic Israel Visit
In a warm diplomatic gesture, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu shared a video on Wednesday showing himself wearing traditional Indian attire ahead of a joint dinner with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling it a surprise for his "friend." The moment occurred during Modi's significant visit to Israel, where he became the first Indian prime minister to address the Israeli parliament.
A Surprise for a Dear Friend
"Before our joint dinner, I surprised my friend Prime Minister Modi by wearing traditional Indian attire," Netanyahu wrote in a post on X. This personal touch highlighted the close rapport between the two leaders, which was further emphasized during Modi's address to a Special Plenary session of the Knesset.
At the Knesset, Netanyahu described PM Modi as not just a friend but a brother, praising India's steadfast support for Israel following the October 7, 2023 Hamas attacks. "Prime ministers and heads of state come to the Knesset and it's always an exciting moment for all of us. But my dear friend Narendra, I'm especially moved by your visit. You are a great friend of Israel and a great leader on the world stage," Netanyahu stated.
Recalling Past Bonds and Current Support
Netanyahu reminisced about Modi's previous visit to Israel in 2017, noting, "We took off our shoes, and waded in the ocean. We didn't walk on water but have done miracles," referencing the iconic image of the two leaders walking barefoot along the Mediterranean coast. He also highlighted India's moral support after the Hamas attack, stating that Modi was among the first world leaders to condemn the violence.
"Right after the horrific attack on October 7, you supported Israel so morally. You didn't flinch or waver, you stood by Israel and stood by the Jews. Thank you," Netanyahu expressed, underscoring the depth of their alliance.
The 'Modi Hug' and Warm Diplomatic Exchanges
Adding to the camaraderie, Netanyahu mentioned their embrace at the airport, humorously calling it a "Modi hug" and expressing a desire to return the gesture from every Knesset member. "It represents the warmth between us," he added, symbolizing the strong bilateral ties.
In his address, PM Modi thanked the Knesset for the honor and dedicated the Speaker of the Knesset Medal to the enduring friendship between India and Israel. He emphasized civilizational links and expanding cooperation in key areas such as:
- Innovation and technology
- Agriculture and water management
- Security and defense
Modi reiterated India's zero-tolerance policy towards terrorism and offered condolences for the victims of the October 7 attacks, asserting that there can be no justification for such brutality. This visit marks a pivotal moment in India-Israel relations, showcasing mutual respect and shared values on the global stage.
