Noida Airport Gets BCAS Security Clearance, Final DGCA Inspection Awaited
Noida Airport Security Clearance Paves Way for Operations

Noida International Airport Secures BCAS Security Clearance, Moves Closer to Launch

In a significant development for India's aviation sector, the Noida International Airport has obtained security clearance from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS). This approval, granted on Thursday, marks a decisive milestone as the greenfield airport enters the final phase before commencing commercial operations. The clearance validates the airport's core security frameworks, including the bomb threat contingency plan (BTCP), anti-hijack contingency plan (AHCP), and airport security programme (ASP).

Final Steps and Timeline for Operations

With the security documents now examined, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is poised to conduct a final inspection and issue the aerodrome licence. Officials from Noida International Airport Limited (NIAL), the government agency overseeing the project, indicate that the licence could be granted within a week after DGCA's inspection. RK Singh, CEO of NIAL, stated, "The security vetting approval on Thursday brings the airport closer to operational readiness."

Shailendra Bhatia, a nodal officer, added that DGCA will soon perform the last inspection, noting that the concessionaire operating the airport must meet specific conditions before the licence is awarded. Once the aerodrome licence is in hand, domestic passenger flights and cargo operations are projected to begin within 45 days, aligning with the project plan. International operations are anticipated to start from September.

Leadership and Operational Readiness

Union aviation secretary Samir Sinha has been actively working to prevent delays, particularly addressing concerns related to the airport's expatriate CEO. Christoph Schnellmann, a Swiss national and veteran from Zurich Airports, who played a key role in building Bengaluru's airport two decades ago, leads the project. Sources highlighted that expat CEOs are common in India's aviation industry, with top airlines like IndiGo and Air India also led by foreigners. "We take pride in having people like Satya Nadella and Sundar Pichai at top positions in the world's biggest tech companies that handle critical security tasks globally. We can't frown on having expat CEOs," a source remarked.

On the ground, infrastructure is fully prepared for launch. The terminal building, air traffic control tower, and runway are complete, with the airport designed to handle 12 million passengers annually in its first phase. Security deployment is already in place, with the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) taking over airport security last year. Residential facilities for CISF personnel, including accommodation for unmarried staff within the airport premises, have been developed by the concessionaire.

Connectivity and Cargo Hub

Connectivity enhancements are also finalized, featuring a 750-metre access road linking the airport to the Yamuna Expressway. The multimodal cargo hub infrastructure is ready, with cargo services expected to launch alongside domestic flights. Recruitment and training of operational manpower have been completed, ensuring a smooth transition to full-scale operations.

At an event in Greater Noida West on Thursday, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced that the country's largest airport would be inaugurated soon. Officials confirmed that the formal inauguration date will be finalized by the Prime Minister's Office, underscoring the project's national significance.
