In response to escalating tensions and multiple explosions reported across Gulf states, members of the Odia Samaj community in the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain have urgently sought the intervention of the Indian government to ensure the safety and security of Odia nationals residing or working in the region. This appeal comes amid reports of missile attacks, air raid sirens, and significant damage to infrastructure in several Gulf countries.
Virtual Meetings and Safety Assurances from Authorities
Members of the Odia Samaj in the UAE, led by President Amiya Mishra, conducted a crucial virtual meeting with the Consulate-General of India regarding the safety of Odia individuals present in Dubai. Officials from the Odisha Paribar Directorate also engaged in discussions with Mishra, who provided assurances that the whereabouts of all Odias in Dubai had been successfully located and confirmed that all were currently safe.
In response to the volatile situation, many Odia workers in the country have either transitioned to work-from-home arrangements or been granted holidays, particularly migrant laborers at their respective work sites. This proactive measure aims to minimize exposure to potential dangers.
Government Initiatives: Helplines and Evacuation Protocols
The Ministry of External Affairs has established a comprehensive support system for Indian nationals in the affected regions. A dedicated WhatsApp group has been created specifically for evacuation coordination, requiring any Odia individual seeking evacuation to register through this platform. Additionally, the MEA has launched a 24-hour toll-free helpline (800-46342) and an emergency hotline (+971-543090571) to provide immediate assistance to those in need.
Authorities at the Resident Commissioner of Odisha office have confirmed they are maintaining continuous communication with the Ministry of External Affairs concerning the safety of Odia people. They emphasized that the situation is being closely monitored with heightened vigilance.
Humanitarian Efforts and Appeals for Large-Scale Evacuation Preparedness
Arun Praharaj, Founder Chairman of Bahrain Odia Samaj and Global Odia Diaspora, has issued an urgent appeal to both the Indian and Odisha state governments to prepare for a potential large-scale evacuation of Odia expatriates. Praharaj highlighted that while the Bahrain Defence Force successfully intercepted a majority of incoming missiles and drones, the resulting debris caused substantial damage to residential buildings and critical industrial sites.
"The persistent sound of missile air raid sirens and the impact of interceptions have created an atmosphere of profound fear here. With regional airspace currently closed, the expatriate community, particularly the large Indian and Odia populations, feels increasingly vulnerable," Praharaj stated.
In a notable humanitarian gesture, Praharaj personally relocated eight Odia families and a Tamil medical student from Juffair to his residence on Saturday following an attack on the US Navy base in the area.
State Government's High-Level Meeting and Precautionary Measures
The Odisha state government convened a high-level meeting to assess the safety and security of Odias residing in West Asia. Chaired by Chief Secretary Anu Garg under directives from Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, the meeting focused on discussing precautionary measures and establishing mechanisms to ensure timely assistance for expatriates from the state.
Garg advised all relevant departments to maintain close monitoring of developments and remain prepared to take swift action if required. This coordinated approach underscores the government's commitment to protecting its citizens abroad during times of crisis.
