Patna District Magistrate Conducts On-Site Inspection for Major Riverfront Development
In a significant move to enhance Patna's connectivity and tourism potential, District Magistrate Thiyagarajan S M conducted a detailed inspection along the Kurji-Digha stretch of the Ganga river on Thursday. The primary objective was to identify and finalize locations for several upcoming inland waterways projects that promise to transform the city's river-based infrastructure.
Three Key Projects to Revolutionize River Transport
The inspection tour focused on three major initiatives: a world-class cruise terminal at Pahalwan Ghat, a community jetty at Digha Ghat, and a ship repair facility in Kurji. The DM emphasized that these projects are designed to strengthen Patna's river transport network while simultaneously boosting tourism and stimulating economic activity in the region.
At Pahalwan Ghat, officials have earmarked a substantial two-acre plot of land for the construction of the proposed cruise terminal. During the visit, authorities briefed the DM that this terminal will serve as a cornerstone of Patna's river tourism infrastructure, positioning the city as a premier destination for river cruises along the Ganga.
Moving to Digha Ghat, the DM identified a specific 20-meter by 20-meter site for a community jetty. This facility is expected to significantly improve local river transport services and enhance passenger access to the Ganga, making river travel more convenient for residents and visitors alike.
Ship Repair Facility to Create Local Employment
In Kurji, the DM confirmed that five acres of land have already been officially allotted to the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) for establishing a comprehensive ship repair facility. Once operational, this center will enable the maintenance and repair of vessels directly within Patna, drastically reducing turnaround times for ships and creating numerous new employment opportunities for the local workforce.
Describing the cruise terminal project as particularly "significant", the DM noted that IWAI is expediting all related work, with the district administration providing full support. The proposed terminal will be an advanced, modern facility featuring state-of-the-art amenities that can effectively position Patna as a major hub for river cruises in Eastern India.
"It will also strengthen river-based economic activities and enhance infrastructure for inland water transport," the DM stated, adding that waterways offer an environmentally friendly mode of travel that aligns with sustainable development goals.
Broader Infrastructure Development Context
Highlighting the government's comprehensive commitment to Patna's multi-dimensional development, the DM revealed that hundreds of infrastructure projects—including roads, bridges, and flyovers—are currently underway across the city. This riverfront development forms part of this larger urban transformation strategy.
In another important update, the DM announced that the much-anticipated Water Metro service is planned for launch later this month, with preparations currently in full swing. Initially, the service will operate between Digha and Kangan Ghat, with future expansion routes already under active consideration by transportation planners.
Anticipated Economic and Transport Benefits
With the upcoming ship repair center and cruise terminal, officials anticipate a substantial increase in vessel movement on the Ganga. This heightened maritime activity is expected to generate significant job creation across various sectors while dramatically improving river transport services throughout the region. The combined effect of these projects promises to elevate Patna's status as a key inland waterways destination while providing sustainable economic growth through enhanced river connectivity.
