Former UK Ambassador to the US Peter Mandelson Arrested in Epstein-Linked Investigation
In a significant development, Peter Mandelson, the former UK ambassador to the United States, has been arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office. This arrest is part of an ongoing Metropolitan Police investigation connected to his association with the convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Arrest Details and Police Confirmation
Mandelson was seen being escorted from his home in Camden and driven away in an unmarked vehicle, as reported by The Guardian. The Metropolitan Police confirmed the arrest of a 72-year-old man without naming him, stating that he was taken to a London police station for interview following search warrants executed at addresses in Camden and Wiltshire.
A police spokesperson elaborated, "Officers have arrested a 72-year-old man on suspicion of misconduct in public office. He was arrested at an address in Camden on Monday, February 23 and has been taken to a London police station for interview. This follows search warrants at two addresses in the Wiltshire and Camden areas."
Investigation Focus and Background
The Met investigation reportedly centers on allegations of leaking Downing Street emails and market-sensitive information to Jeffrey Epstein. The probe was initiated after the release of files related to the late financier, who was convicted of child sex offences in 2008.
In February, officers conducted searches at two properties linked to Mandelson in London and Wiltshire. Then Met deputy assistant commissioner Hayley Sewart commented on the complexity of the case, saying, "The searches are related to an ongoing investigation into misconduct in public office offences, involving a 72-year-old man. This will be a complex investigation requiring a significant amount of further evidence-gathering and analysis. It will take some time to do this work comprehensively."
Mandelson is understood to maintain that he has not committed any offence, but the arrest has intensified political scrutiny.
Political Fallout and Resignations
The development has raised questions about Prime Minister Keir Starmer's decision to appoint Mandelson as US ambassador in December 2024. Starmer had acknowledged awareness of Mandelson's contact with Epstein after Epstein's imprisonment, according to reports.
Mandelson, a senior Labour Party figure for decades, was first elected as MP for Hartlepool in 1992 and played a key role in the New Labour project under Tony Blair, later holding multiple cabinet positions. In response to the revelations, Mandelson has quit the Labour Party and resigned from the House of Lords, marking a dramatic turn in his political career.
The police investigation remains ongoing, with further updates expected as evidence is gathered and analyzed.
