Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred the newly instituted 'Guardian of the Blue Horizon' Presidential Distinction by Seychelles during his visit to the island nation, marking a historic milestone that underscores India's global stature and proactive climate leadership.
First Recipient of Newly Created Award
PM Modi became the first recipient of the award, which was created just weeks before his visit after the Seychelles government overhauled its national awards system. Earlier this month, Seychelles' Parliament repealed the existing National Awards system, including the Medal of the Republic of Seychelles, and approved the creation of the Guardian of the Blue Horizon distinction. Previously, the Medal of the Republic of Seychelles was the country's highest national honour, with every President of Seychelles automatically entitled to receive it. The former system had also faced criticism over transparency. The systemic overhaul highlights the immense value Seychelles attaches to PM Modi's visionary leadership.
Modi's Commitment to Climate Action
The honour was bestowed for PM Modi's steadfast commitment to environmental conservation and advancing the aspirations of Small Island Developing States. Expressing deep appreciation, PM Modi thanked the people and government of Seychelles and dedicated the award to countries battling climate change. 'Grateful to the people and Government of Seychelles as well as President Herminie for conferring upon me the 'Guardian of the Blue Horizon',' he posted on social media. He added, 'I humbly accept this honour and dedicate it to all those countries that are fighting the challenge of climate change and consider environmental protection their responsibility towards future generations. This is a pressing challenge which we have to overcome together.'
India's Role in Global Environmental Efforts
Reaffirming India's resolve to lead ecological preservation, PM Modi stated that India is ready to do whatever is required to make 'our planet greener and sustainable.' He highlighted that this commitment is reflected in India's domestic policies, emphasis on Mission LiFE, and global initiatives like the International Solar Alliance and the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure. The award underscores India's growing influence in climate diplomacy and its partnership with small island nations vulnerable to climate change.
