PM Modi in Malaysia: A Firm Stand Against Terrorism and a New Era of Bilateral Cooperation
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his official visit to Malaysia, delivered a powerful message on terrorism, asserting India's unwavering position with no room for double standards or compromise. This declaration came as part of a joint press statement with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, following bilateral talks at Seri Perdana, the official residence in Putrajaya.
Strengthening Strategic Trust and Economic Transformation
Modi highlighted that strategic trust between New Delhi and Kuala Lumpur is the cornerstone for economic transformation. He emphasized expanding cooperation in key areas such as artificial intelligence, digital technologies, semiconductors, health, and food security. The CEO Forum held during the visit has opened new avenues for trade and investment, setting the stage for enhanced economic collaboration between the two ASEAN partners.
Joint Statement Condemns Terrorism in All Forms
The joint statement issued after the delegation-level talks took a clear and strong stand against terrorism. Both leaders unequivocally condemned terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, including cross-border terrorism. They called for zero tolerance and concerted international efforts to combat terrorism comprehensively. This marks a significant shift for Malaysia, which had previously been seen aligning with Pakistan on issues like Kashmir, indicating a prioritization of its bilateral relationship with India.
Enhanced Security and Defence Cooperation
In the realm of security, Modi announced plans to strengthen cooperation in counter-terrorism, intelligence sharing, and maritime security. The two nations will expand defence collaboration and work together to counter radicalization, violent extremism, and combat the financing of terrorism. They also recognized the linkages between terrorism and transnational organized crime, agreeing to share information and best practices to address these challenges.
Broadening Bilateral Ties and Agreements
Following their meeting, Modi and Anwar witnessed the exchange of 11 cooperation agreements covering areas such as semiconductors, disaster management, and peacekeeping. Anwar noted that India and Malaysia are steadily expanding cooperation in trade, investment, connectivity, and defence, with bilateral trade expected to surpass last year's $18.6 billion mark. He expressed hope for promoting the use of local-currency settlement to facilitate economic interactions.
Focus on the Indo-Pacific Region
Modi also addressed New Delhi's approach to the Indo-Pacific, describing it as emerging as the growth engine of the world. This perspective aligns with the broader strategic goals of both nations in fostering regional stability and economic prosperity. Anwar acknowledged India's significant rise on the global trade and economic front, underscoring the comprehensive nature of their partnership.
