PM Modi in Malaysia: No Compromise on Terrorism, Strengthens Ties

PM Modi Reiterates India's Uncompromising Stand on Terrorism in Malaysia

In a significant diplomatic engagement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing a joint press statement alongside Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in Kuala Lumpur, firmly declared that India's stance on terrorism remains resolute and uncompromising. He underscored New Delhi's steadfast support for peace initiatives globally, reinforcing the nation's commitment to combating terrorism without any double standards.

Strengthening Security and Defence Collaboration

During the high-level talks, PM Modi announced that India and Malaysia would intensify their cooperation in the security domain. This includes enhanced efforts in counter-terrorism, intelligence sharing, and maritime security. Additionally, the two nations plan to expand their defence collaboration, making it more comprehensive to address evolving security challenges in the region.

"Our message on terrorism is clear: no double standards and no compromise," PM Modi asserted, highlighting the urgency of a unified approach against terror threats. His remarks in Malaysia came shortly after India indicated that the extradition of fugitive preacher Zakir Naik would be among the key issues discussed during the bilateral talks with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

Deepening Bilateral Ties and Shared Heritage

The joint press statement followed delegation-level discussions between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Malaysian counterpart, Anwar Ibrahim, during which several memoranda of understanding (MoUs) were exchanged. PM Modi emphasized the special relationship between India and Malaysia, noting their status as maritime neighbours with centuries-old, affectionate ties.

"Today, Malaysia is the second largest country in the world with a population of Indian origin. Our civilisations, shared cultural heritage, and democratic values bind us together," he stated, acknowledging the deep-rooted connections that foster mutual trust and cooperation.

Focus on Indo-Pacific and Economic Transformation

PM Modi reiterated India's priority on ASEAN centrality in the Indo-Pacific region, which is committed to development, peace, and stability. He mentioned that although he could not attend the ASEAN Summit last year, he had promised to visit Malaysia at the earliest opportunity, fulfilling that commitment with this 2026 foreign visit.

Beyond security, the partnership will advance in areas such as artificial intelligence, digital technologies, semiconductors, health, and food security. The CEO forum organized during the visit has opened new avenues for trade and investment, paving the way for economic transformation through strategic trust between the two nations.

Cultural Bonds and Tamil Language Connection

Highlighting cultural affinities, PM Modi pointed out that the shared love for the Tamil language further strengthens India-Malaysia relations. In Malaysia, Tamil has a strong presence in education, media, and cultural life. With the recent Audio Visual Agreement, he expressed confidence that film and music, particularly Tamil films, will bring the hearts of both countries closer, enhancing people-to-people ties.

This visit marks a pivotal step in bolstering bilateral relations, with a clear focus on security, economic growth, and cultural exchange, setting a robust foundation for future collaborations.
