PM Modi Makes Historic Landing on Assam's First Emergency Airstrip

In a landmark event for Assam's infrastructure and national security, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday became the first prime minister to land on the northeast region's inaugural emergency landing facility (ELF) at Moran in Dibrugarh district. This strategic development marks a significant leap forward in bolstering defense capabilities and emergency response mechanisms in this border-sensitive area.

Dual-Use Highway-Airstrip: A Rs 100 Crore Investment

Constructed at a cost of Rs 100 crore, the 4.2-kilometer stretch on the Moran Bypass serves a dual purpose as a national highway and a critical airstrip for the Indian Air Force (IAF) during emergencies. Designed for civil-military use, this facility provides a robust backup to Dibrugarh airport, ensuring operational continuity during crises such as natural disasters or conflicts. It is engineered to support fighter jets weighing up to 40 tonnes and heavy transport aircraft with a maximum take-off weight of 74 tonnes, thereby enhancing defense logistics, rapid deployment, and humanitarian aid efforts.

Spectacular Aerial Display Highlights Operational Prowess

The Prime Minister's visit commenced with a breathtaking 40-minute aerial demonstration by the IAF, showcasing the facility's operational readiness. Fighter jets, including the formidable Sukhoi Su-30MKI and Rafale, executed precise takeoffs and landings, illustrating seamless transitions from highway to airfield. The An-32 aircraft, renowned as the IAF's reliable 'workhorse' for cargo and troop transport, demonstrated its versatility in challenging terrains. Additionally, Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH) performed heli-borne manoeuvres, simulating humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) operations. These agile helicopters excel in search-and-rescue missions, medical evacuations, surveillance, and precision airdrops, crucial for remote and flood-prone northeastern regions.

Garud Commandos and Strategic Significance

Adding to the high-octane display, the elite Garud Commandos, the Air Force's special forces, executed precise rappelling exercises during the demonstration. This highlighted their critical role in counter-terrorism operations and high-risk extractions, underscoring the facility's strategic importance for defense preparedness. The ELF strengthens India's ability to respond swiftly to threats and emergencies in the northeastern border areas, which are often vulnerable to natural calamities and security challenges.

Warm Welcome and Broader Implications

Earlier at Chabua airfield, Prime Minister Modi received a warm reception from Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, and other top state officials. This event not only celebrates a milestone in infrastructure development but also signals a commitment to enhancing regional connectivity and security. The facility is expected to play a pivotal role in improving transportation networks, supporting economic growth, and ensuring swift military and humanitarian responses in Assam and beyond.
