In a proactive move to enhance safety at railway crossings, Southern Railway and the Railway Protection Force (RPF) jointly conducted a comprehensive awareness program on Friday at the Trichy goods yard. The initiative specifically targeted truck drivers, aiming to educate them on the critical importance of road safety when navigating railway level crossings.

The event saw robust participation, with approximately 110 truck drivers in attendance. They received detailed briefings on the severe consequences of rash, negligent, and drunken driving near level crossing gates. A joint team from the RPF, led by Inspector Ajay Kumar, played a key role in delivering these crucial messages.
Legal Framework and Penalties Explained
During the session, drivers were informed about specific legal provisions that govern such offenses. The RPF team elaborated on Section 19(1A) of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, and Section 160 of the Railway Act, which outline punishable actions. Importantly, it was highlighted that driving licenses of erring truck drivers could be suspended for up to six months through the relevant Regional Transport Office (RTO) authorities.
Real-World Examples to Drive Home the Message
To underscore the seriousness of these regulations, the RPF distributed copies of proceedings from the RTO in Chengalpattu, dated February 27. These documents detailed the suspension of a truck driver's license following a level crossing gate accident. The materials were provided in both Tamil and English versions to ensure clear understanding among all participants.
The RPF emphasized that showcasing real examples of legal actions is an effective strategy to foster awareness and instill a sense of responsibility among heavy vehicle drivers. This approach is expected to contribute significantly to reducing accidents and improving safety standards at railway crossings in the region.
