US Deputy Secretary Lauds India Trade Deal as Nearing Completion
In a significant statement at the Raisina Dialogue in New Delhi, visiting US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau declared that the trade deal between the United States and India is now at the "finish line", emphasizing its potential to unlock nearly limitless opportunities for both nations. Landau expressed optimism about collaborative efforts with India and other countries to foster a transition in West Asia, aiming for a "new normal" in the region.
Learning from Past Mistakes: A Shift in US Strategy
On the topic of bilateral relations, Landau made it clear that the US intends to avoid repeating the errors made with China two decades ago. He stated, "India should understand that we're not going to make the same mistakes we made with China 20 years ago in terms of saying we'll let you develop these markets and the next thing we know, you're beating us in commercial events." He stressed that any agreements must be fair to American citizens, as the US government is accountable to its people, just as India's government is to its own.
Energy Cooperation and Multilateral Ties Highlighted
Landau highlighted the US as an ideal energy partner for India, saying, "I could think of no better alternative source of energy for India than the US. We are an energy-rich country; we want to cooperate with you... We will work with you to ensure your energy needs are met in the short as well as the long term." Regarding multilateral engagements, he clarified that the US is not a charity organization for the United Nations, emphasizing that cooperation must be based on reciprocity and mutual respect. He noted that "America First is not America Alone," underscoring the importance of strategic partnerships.
Iran and Regional Stability Discussed
On the issue of Iran, Landau addressed the US red line against nuclear weapon development, acknowledging that previous approaches "did not work." He expressed hope for a regional "new normal," stating that ultimately, the Iranian people must decide their leadership. This comes amid recent tensions, including Iran's criticism of the US after an incident involving the warship IRIS Dena, which Iran claimed was sunk by a torpedo while hosting the Indian Navy.
Landau's remarks underscore a renewed focus on strengthening US-India ties through fair trade, energy collaboration, and shared strategic interests, while learning from past geopolitical challenges.
