Vizag Hosts Historic Triple Naval Events: IFR 2026, MILAN, and IONS Conclave
Vizag's Triple Naval Events: IFR 2026, MILAN, IONS Conclave

Vizag Prepares for Unprecedented Naval Gathering

The coastal city of Visakhapatnam, often called Vizag, is poised to reclaim its position at the forefront of global maritime affairs from February 15 to 25. The Indian Navy is orchestrating a historic convergence of three major international naval events: the International Fleet Review (IFR), Exercise MILAN, and the Indian Ocean Naval Symposium (IONS) Conclave of Chiefs. This marks the first occasion India has simultaneously hosted all three prestigious gatherings, representing the largest assembly of global maritime forces ever convened on Indian shores.

A Decade's Return with Enhanced Significance

India has previously hosted the International Fleet Review twice—in Mumbai during 2001 and in Vizag in 2016. The 2026 edition returns to Vizag after a decade, arriving at a pivotal juncture in India's naval evolution. The triple event assembly underscores India's growing maritime capabilities and diplomatic outreach, with meticulous arrangements underway to ensure its success.

Presidential Inauguration and Fleet Review

The IFR-2026 will formally commence on the evening of February 17 with a Presidential Banquet in Vizag. This distinguished event will be attended by President Droupadi Murmu, the Supreme Commander of the Indian Armed Forces, alongside international dignitaries, national and state representatives, delegation heads from participating nations, and senior military and government officials. The banquet serves as the official opening of the IFR proceedings.

On the morning of February 18, President Murmu will review the assembled fleet at the review anchorage area off Visakhapatnam. Approximately 70 ships from India and friendly foreign countries will participate. The indigenous Naval Offshore Patrol Vessel INS Sumedha will function as the Presidential Yacht, leading the Presidential Column with the President embarked. The review will feature anchored ships, a steam past by mobile columns of warships and submarines, and a flypast by naval aircraft.

INS Vikrant: The Star Attraction

Among the three naval events, the IFR stands as the most prestigious ceremony, where warships, submarines, and aircraft from allied nations gather at sea to demonstrate capabilities and enhance maritime cooperation. India's indigenous aircraft carrier, INS Vikrant, which played a significant role during Operation Sindoor, is expected to be the centerpiece of IFR-2026, symbolizing India's naval prowess.

International City Parade and Public Engagement

Beyond naval displays at sea, the IFR will include an International City Parade, cultural exhibitions, and public engagement programs celebrating global maritime heritage. Scheduled for the evening of February 19 along the RK Beach stretch in Vizag, the parade will begin with an air power demonstration by Indian naval aircraft and helicopters.

The City Parade will feature marching contingents and military bands from the Indian Army, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard, alongside foreign contingents with their ceremonial bands. Participation from the National Cadet Corps, Sea Cadet Corps, and Navy Children School will highlight the involvement of youth. The event will blend military ceremony with cultural artistry, showcasing vibrant troupes and artistic tableaux that reflect India's maritime heritage and diversity.

The parade will conclude with a ceremonial illumination of ships anchored off the coast, followed by a synchronized display of fireworks, laser lights, and drone formations, providing a spectacular finale to IFR-2026.

Security and Indigenous Showcase

Over 8,000 police personnel have been deployed to ensure security for the IFR and City Parade. The event will showcase India's indigenous naval assets, including ships, aircraft carriers, and destroyers, reflecting the nation's transformation into a builder's navy. IFRs, typically held every few years, serve as a crucial platform for defence diplomacy, fostering international cooperation and strategic partnerships.
