Ahmedabad's Infrastructure Overhaul Hits Major Roadblocks
The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has been aggressively pursuing a massive infrastructure upgrade, focusing on stormwater management, drainage systems, and water networks. However, this ambitious drive has hit a significant snag, with 10 critical projects collectively valued at Rs 396 crore falling behind schedule. This delay has not only disrupted timelines but has severely compounded the daily inconveniences faced by residents, as excavations and unfinished works litter the cityscape.
Widespread Excavations and Chronic Road Issues
Over the past two years, the AMC has intensified its focus on infrastructure development, currently overseeing more than 100 major projects with a total cost exceeding Rs 3,000 crore. This extensive activity has turned dug-up roads into a persistent problem throughout Ahmedabad. Specifically, 48 stormwater network projects are underway, costing approximately Rs 1,080 crore, while over 30 projects for replacing and rehabilitating aging drainage lines are in progress, with expenses surpassing Rs 1,500 crore. Additionally, water network projects worth more than Rs 600 crore are being implemented, further contributing to the city's construction chaos.
Case Study: A Major Water Project Delay
An anonymous AMC official highlighted a particularly notable delay in the eastern part of the city. This project involves connecting a 2,100mm diameter main trunk line near the Express Highway to the Rasuka Water Treatment Plant. With a budget of Rs 145.4 crore, it was originally slated for completion by February 14, 2024, within a 21-month timeframe from its start date. As of now, only 83.5% of the work has been finished, leaving a substantial portion incomplete.
The official explained that a key component required laying a water line under the railway tracks from Ramol's Lalbegi Circle towards Aslali. For this, Rs 30.9 crore was deposited with the railways, with an expected completion within six months. However, work began in November 2024 and proceeded slowly to avoid disrupting railway operations. It was entirely halted during the monsoon season from June to October 2025, resuming only in December 2025. The project is now estimated to take another six months to finish.
Another contributing factor to the delay was that the main contractor received an extension to handle network laying in other areas, further pushing back the timeline. Consequently, what was intended to be completed by February 2024 remains unfinished, with the AMC's standing committee approving a new deadline of June 30, 2026.
Broader Implications for Civic Life
These delays underscore the challenges in managing large-scale urban infrastructure projects. While the AMC's efforts aim to enhance Ahmedabad's resilience and service delivery, the missed deadlines have aggravated citizen woes, from traffic disruptions to prolonged exposure to construction hazards. The situation calls for improved project management and coordination to minimize future inconveniences and ensure timely completion of vital public works.
